s emerged.
Our national problems, both cultural and political, are bigger than
which political party is in power. For real change to happen we all
need to be involved.
We need to ask ourselves: “Do we really understand the dynamics and
complexities of the issues that challenge us in the world?”
I was certainly lacking in my education and knowledge. As an artist I was
resistant too, but that’s not possible anymore. In our current economy,
buried in debt, where everything must be an immediate commodity, there
is little room for art. I had to learn to be willing to seriously educate myself
and find patience with things I didn’t understand, like economics.
We all need to take action. Simple actions in our daily choices can and will
make a big difference with the participation of many people. It adds up.
We must extricate ourselves from corporate hegemony—wherever
possible, stop buying the products of corporations that use unsustainable
methods and work against the public good. Buy local. Cross-reference
news and important information from multiple sources.
We can’t live a sustainable life in an economy where everything must
constantly grow no matter how damaging the cost of producing those
goods may be. We have become thieves, stealing from ourselves,
from our own future.
We must learn from our mistakes. There are many great ideas—possible
solutions to our collective problems.
This is supposed to be an art journal, but too much has happened
in recent years. As an artist, I needed to make sense of it all, re-educate
myself and my naive views about economics, politics, activism and art. I
needed to reframe the mess for myself. What these pages represent are
part manifesto, part map to answer my initial question of “Where do I
go from here?” This issue is that response. It took a lot longer to process
than I would have liked, but I think the message is stronger for the delay.
The second portion of the issue is dedicated to Fluxion’s original mission—
to explore, celebrate and showcase artists and their work.
Please get involved!
Encourage and support others’ efforts.
